Updated requirements for 2026

1. Minimum monthly income

The minimum income required in 2026 is €2,946.00 gross per month (equivalent to 200% of the SMI, the Interprofessional Minimum Wage).

Important: this income must be proven for the last 3 months before the application, with documents such as:

  • Bank statements
  • Remote employment contracts
  • Proof of payment from clients (for freelancers)

2. A valid working relationship

You need to prove that you:

  • Work remotely for one or more companies outside Spain, or
  • Are self-employed and serve international clients

Required documents:

  • Employment contract (if you are a remote employee)
  • A letter from the company confirming remote work
  • Client portfolio + contracts (if you are a freelancer)

3. Professional experience

You must prove at least 3 years of experience in your field, or a related academic qualification.

Accepted documents:

  • Work history (previous contracts)
  • University degree or professional certifications
  • An up-to-date LinkedIn profile (it does not replace documents, but it helps)

4. Health insurance

You must hold private health insurance with full coverage in Spain from the moment you enter.

5. Criminal record

A criminal record certificate from the country where you have lived over the last 5 years.

Processing time

After you submit your documents:

  • Initial review: 10 to 20 business days
  • Full approval: 1 to 3 months (depending on the consulate)
