One of the biggest challenges for people who have just arrived in Spain is renting an apartment. With no Spanish credit history, no local payslip and no guarantor, many landlords simply say “no”.

But don’t worry: there are practical strategies to get around this. Let’s go through them.

1. Offer to pay in advance

Spanish landlords value financial security. If you can show that you have the resources (even without local income yet), offer:

✅ 3 to 6 months of rent in advance
✅ A reinforced deposit (2 months instead of 1)

This shows commitment and lowers the risk the landlord perceives.

2. Use platforms built for foreigners

Some platforms make it easier for foreigners without a rental history:

  • Spotahome: lets you book apartments online without an in-person viewing.
  • Uniplaces: focused on students and international professionals.
  • Badi: ideal for sharing a flat.

Tip: avoid Idealista or Fotocasa at first — they are designed for residents with a history.

3. Short-term rentals as a bridge

If you can’t get a long-term contract right away, consider:

  • Airbnb for the first month
  • Seasonal apartments (furnished)
  • Long-stay hostels

This buys you time to:

  • Open a Spanish bank account
  • Get your NIE
  • Build local relationships

4. A reference letter from your employer or your immigration advisor

If you already have a job (even a remote one), ask for a reference letter from your company confirming:

  • Your position
  • Monthly income
  • Contract duration

If you are working with an immigration advisory (like Via Espanha), we can provide an institutional support letter that boosts your credibility.

5. Have all your documents ready

When you find an apartment, have these prepared:

📄 Passport copy
📄 NIE (or proof of application)
📄 Bank statements for the last 3 months
📄 Employment contract or income letter
📄 References from previous rentals (even from your home country)

6. Consider less competitive neighborhoods

In Madrid, neighborhoods such as Chamberí, Tetuán and Carabanchel are more affordable and have landlords who are more open to foreigners. Avoid the tourist center (Sol, Malasaña) at first.
